MKP have been utilizing 3D design and drawings for over 10 years and as such we have an enviable reputation in being able to deliver designs in BIM. MKP originally utilized the Autocad MEP software, which has historically been a better draughting tool for MEP rather than Revit. It is only recently were Autocad stopped developing Autocad MEP and have predominately promoted Revit MEP as the draughting tool for 3D MEP cad, that we have moved across to using Revit.

VISUALISATION

MKP utilise BIM in all projects, it benefits MKP and the client to visualise the end product and helps the contractor with production of working drawings and on-site co-ordination. By keeping all the information in one model, the transfer of information between project partners becomes more efficient. This enables the overall design and construction process to be more accurate and consistent, with the aim of avoiding costly last-minute changes on site. Overall, a BIM approach can save time and help reduce waste and on-site work and assist the other members of the team to visualize the proposals by use of rendering and animation. From experience using the 3D model made problems obvious and often presented clear options for resolutions. Sharing responsibility for these problems meant that the team could decide upon the best solution in each case and assign an action accordingly.

IMPROVED DESIGN AND DELIVERY

MKP takes full advantage of the benefits of BIM modelling in order to improve the design process for all members of the design team and the owner. MKP’s expert use of BIM translates into superior contract documents, better visualisation, decreased production time, and downstream benefits including less schedule risk and reduced field problems. We are at the forefront of BIM technologies, working directly with software manufacturers and writing our own in-house scripts and routines to fill interoperability gaps. MKPs strength in BIM lies in its many years of experience on a wide range of projects. That experience translates into an improved design and delivery process for our clients.

The interface between the MEP designer and installer needs to be collaborative, with the installer providing their requirements before the design model is created, and with the designer monitoring the implications of changes after detailed design. This way, ownership of the model is passed over at a recognised stage, but information is shared between the two parties in order to smooth out the handover process.

FUTURE USE OF BIM

There are no bounds to how far BIM can be applied and with the continuing development of the software suites there is always further learning and development required. There is a change in mind set required to fully utilise the benefits of BIM and 3D modelling. MKP made this change in working philosophy approximately 10 years ago, but the vast majority of our competitors have had their skill sets diluted by predominately producing BSRIA stage 3 sketch scheme information for many years.
